The Pilot Logbook
Much more important than you may think.
Code of
Federal Regulations
§61.51 Pilot logbooks.
(h) Logging training time.
(1) A person may log training time when that person receives training from an authorized instructor in an aircraft, full flight simulator, flight training device, or aviation training device.
(2) The training time must be logged in a logbook and must:
(i) Be endorsed in a legible manner by the authorized instructor; and
(ii) Include a description of the training given, the length of the training lesson, and the authorized instructor's signature, certificate number, and certificate expiration date.
Each and every entry is "for the record."
What a CFI places in your logbook is defined in Federal Regulations. Don't settle for less. With COMPASS, your CFI can do nothing but LOG the right way, every day, every time.
Training not documented, is training not done.
Without verifiable evidence in the logbook, your sweat and financial equity in perfecting your skills is simply a verbal story. With COMPASS, you'll get the credit you've earned: every lesson, every skill, LOGGED CORRECTLY every time.
Admissible as evidence in a court of law.
Because your logbook is a legal document it can be used to support and defend what was and was not covered during the course of your training. No other platform comes close to COMPASS in capturing all you accomplish as you accomplish it.

COMPASS LOGBOOK
RIGHT is a student pilot's first flight lesson logbook entry using COMPASS. The instructor taught this student AND documented over 25 training items. That's 23 (or 900%) more items than our student with the tradition pen and paper logbook received. There is NO question what went on during that training period. Not only is entry legibility crystal clear, all go into this student's database which auto-calculates her flight time and tasks.

TRADITIONAL LOGBOOKS
BELOW are traditional logbook entries of a student pilot's first two flights. While the student likely did a lot more than two (2) training items with the CFI that first flight lesson, legally 2 is all anyone can give him/her credit for. That could wind up being a problem later on. Especially if this student changes instructors. Do these entries comply with CFR legibility requirements? Vx Development believes you deserve better than this.

How much your pilot logbook is worth
$250
Approximate cost of
each logbook entry
The average cost for private pilot's license is around $10,000. Per the FAA, the minimum number of flight hours it takes is 40. On average it takes 65. Doing the math using 40, you get $250 per flight hour. Each illegible entry is at risk for non-count or insignificance to your overall totals to who really matters, the DPE.
Each and every COMPASS logbook entry is clear and legible and in accordance with the FARs. Raise your value, it's just too easy to give you all the credit you've earned.
$625
Student's approximate total cost for their CFI's time spent handwriting
logbook entries after each one of their lessons
On average, a CFI charges $50/hour and takes approximately 15 minutes ($12.50) to complete a handwritten entry into the traditional logbook. A private pilot student meets with his/her CFI about 50 times (flight and ground) in the course of obtaining a license. Do the math. Students pay a whopping total of $625 for handwritten logbook entries.
CFIs can make COMPASS logbook entries as easy as a "click" on their iPAD whether you all are in the air as skills happen or on the ground. No smooth air or pen required.
$50 -1.2K
Cost of math errors in totals of your flight time and skill requirements discovered by the DPE
This cost varies depending on the DPE. Some charge an admin fee for just coming out to the airfield. Others charge the entire cost of a checkride even though deferred (didn't happen) based on inaccuracies in your logbook totals of mandatory items. Worst case scenario they take the whole fee ($600) and when you're ready again, it costs you another $600 fee.
COMPASS auto-calculates your logbook entry's count of required time and skills. Math errors are an analogbook's problem, not ours. If COMPASS shows all requirements are met, it's DPE ready.
$250 -10K
Cost of a lost or significantly damaged logbook, especially prior to your private pilot checkride
Perhaps the most costly and certainly the most tragic situations for any pilot, both student and licensed. Damage beyond recognition or total loss of your hardcopy logbook requires significant effort to recreate. Unless backed up or photo-copied up to the very last entry, it's very doubtful it will never again be 100%.
The entirety of your COMPASS logbook is safely stored in the cloud, accessible and printable anytime and anywhere you wish. It will always be 100%.

I can tell you what my last CFI and I went over. But to be honest, I'm not quite sure if that's what he's written in my logbook.

I can't use any of these entries as counts for your training Joe since I'm not exactly sure what much of it means. Four basics? There's no such reference in the FARs.
